Weakened Cyclone Asani likely to enter Coastal Andhra Pradesh : Heavy rains expected

HnExpress Mayank Chakravarty, Weather Report : Cyclone Asani, to make landfall, and could slowly recurve north-northeast wards and move along Narsapur, Yanam, Kakinada, Tuni and Visakhapatnam coasts in Andhra pradesh. The ‘severe cyclonic storm’ is expected to gradually weaken into a ‘cyclonic storm’ today, and then into a depression by Thursday morning and emerge into west central Bay of Bengal.

Cyclone Asani lies about 50km south- southeast of Machilipatnam, 150 km south-southeast of Kakinada, and 290 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh; and 530 km south- southwest of Gopalpur and 640 km southwest of Puri in Odisha. At 5.30 am, the storm was moving 6 kmph. A ‘red alert’ has been issued for districts in coastal Andhra, including Guntur and Krishna. Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Godavari districts have been placed on ‘yellow’ alert.



Isolated places in Odisha and West Bengal, meanwhile, are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Andhra is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall at most places. Weakening of Asani: Cyclone Asani is expected to weaken into a ‘cyclonic storm’ today gradually.

The eye of the storm lies 60 km away from Machilipatnam and 180 km away from Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh and is moving at 12 km per hour during the early hours of Wednesday. The cyclonic storm is under the continuous surveillance of IMD’s Doppler Weather Radar (DWR) at Machilipatnam. It could reach Machilipatnam by around 11 am to noon IST.
